How SEO actually works for a local business
SEO is not magic keywords or a monthly report full of green arrows. Google runs your pages through a system with gates, and good SEO clears them in order: first be findable and clearly relevant so Google retrieves you, then earn enough trust and authority to be shortlisted, then be the result real customers actually choose, in the neighborhoods where the searches and the revenue are, not where the map happens to look impressive. These guides break each gate down.
The path through these guides
- Foundations: what SEO is, how Google search actually works, how to do keyword research, then keyword clusters and site structure.
- Local: your Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, and local links.
- Buying it: what SEO costs and how long it takes.
- Strategy: why map rankings do not equal revenue, how to forecast what SEO is worth, how to get recommended by AI, and how to run SEO across multiple locations.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Chasing rankings for their own sake. A number-one ranking in a town where nobody searches is worth nothing; position four in your densest, highest-revenue neighborhood can be worth a full schedule. Good local SEO starts from where the customers and the money are, then works backward to the rankings that reach them.
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to work?
For most local businesses, meaningful movement takes a few months and compounding results build over six to twelve. It is slower than paid ads but builds visibility you own instead of rent.
What is the difference between SEO and local SEO?
SEO is ranking in Google's standard results. Local SEO adds the map pack and Google Business Profile, the results tied to location that decide who gets the call for nearby service searches.
Do map-pack rankings guarantee more customers?
No. Coverage only matters where people actually search and where your customers live. Ranking across empty areas looks good on a map but generates no leads, which is why we weight rankings by revenue.
Does SEO still matter with AI search?
Yes, and arguably more. AI assistants pull from the same signals (structure, relevance, reviews, and citations) that strong SEO builds. Getting recommended by AI is an extension of SEO, not a replacement for it.
